Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes Analysis
14:00 at Leopardstown Racecourse on 9th June
This Group 3 race over 10-furlongs is regarded as one of the main trials for both the English Derby and the Irish Derby but only High Chaparral (both 2002) and Fame and Glory (Irish 2009) have gone on to enjoy Classic success. That hasn’t stopped Aidan O’Brien dominating the race this century by saddling 11 of the last 20 winners, though Jim Bolger has managed to win two of the last eight editions.
O’Brien and Bolger saddle four of this year’s six runners between them, but Bolger’s runner Agitare finished behind several Aidan O’Brien runners last season in a winless 5-race campaign. That suggests he’ll have needed to improve from two to three to add another win in the race to Bolger’s CV.
Aidan O’Brien saddles three runners this season and that sets punters with the problem of picking the right one. Jockey bookings suggest Russian Emperor may be the one with last year’s Derby-winning jockey Seamie Heffernan in the plate. However, Wayne Lordan (Iberia) and Padraig Beggy (Cormorant) have both won recent Classics for O’Brien.
The market move for Wichita in the 2,000 Guineas with Frankie Dettori on board also shows that things aren’t always that simple at Ballydoyle, as Wichita went on to finish well in front of Arizona who was ridden by O’Brien’s number one jockey Ryan Moore. O’Brien also puts first-time blinkers on both Iberia and Cormorant.

With seven of the last nine winners of this race having had a prep-run, it could be worth siding with Russian Emperor, who is the only horse in the field to have run this year.

Leopardstown Fillies Trial Stakes Analysis
14:30 at Leopardstown Racecourse on 9th June
There are no trends for this Group 3 race over 7 furlongs but, as you might expect, Aidan O’Brien is again well-represented. However, he poses punters even more of a dilemma this time with his jockey bookings.
Padraig Beggy, who would normally be classed as the third-choice jockey behind Heffernan and Lordan, is aboard the early favourite and top-rated horse Tango. Heffernan has ridden Tango once before but he’s aboard Love Locket who is rated 16lb lower, yet he’s not ridden her before. Meanwhile, Lordan rides Precious Moments for the first time, who is rated 6lb lower than Tango.
Unforgetable, trained by Joseph O’Brien, doesn’t have much to find on ratings, and she was second to the 1,000 Guineas Love on her third start as a 2-year-old. She did disappoint on her next three starts but any money for her would be interesting.

It could be worth taking an each-way punt on Know It All to beat the O’Brien battalions. Rated just 3lb behind Tango, she has decent form over 7-furlongs for trainer Johnny Murtagh. She also looks sure to make a better 3-year-old, while she looks nicely drawn in stall-5.
