On Thursday, Goa casinos were once again given a six-month extension to operate in the River Mandovi, this time till 31st March 2021. The previous six-month extension was set to expire on 30th September 2020.
Back in 2013, the BJP led government decided that the six offshore casinos should be relocated, but successive state administrations have failed to find a suitable spot for the same. Also, several sites have also been opposed by the locals and politicians alike.
The casinos have therefore existed in a precarious state of continuous six-month extensions since March 2014.
All Goa casinos were shut down as a response to the coronavirus pandemic in March. Despite other sectors beginning to re-open, there’s still no word when casinos will be allowed to open their doors.
