The Arizona Diamondbacks will be looking for a series sweep against the Los Angeles Angels, while the Angels will be looking for a win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. The Angels currently sit 4.5 games behind Houston for the second place spot in the American League West.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are six games behind San Francisco for the final playoff spot in the National League. MyBookie has a moneyline on this game of Los Angeles -160, while Arizona checks in at +135.
Diamondbacks Play the Spoiler
The Arizona Diamondbacks come into play with a record of 19-31, 16 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. They are 12.5 games behind San Diego for second place and six games behind San Francisco and Philadelphia for the two wild card spots.
The D-Backs have some work to do and they are most likely going to have to win out to earn a playoff berth. So, that leaves the spoiler role, and Arizona will be looking once again to spoil the Angels’ late playoff push by sweeping them on Thursday.
They will send lefty Alex Young to the mound to go for said sweep. Young is 2-3 with a 4.42 ERA on the season. In his last outing, Young threw the ball very well, going 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits in a 4-3 win over Seattle.
The Diamondbacks’ offense is led by left fielder David Peralta. Peralta is hitting .297 with five home runs and 30 RBI. Right fielder Kole Calhoun leads the team in home runs and RBI with 11 and 31 despite hitting just .215.
Angels Playoff Push?
The Los Angeles Angels come into play with a record of 20-30, 11 games behind the Oakland Athletics in the American League West. They currently sit 4.5 games behind the Houston Astros for the second place spot in the West, and 2.5 games behind Seattle for third place.
The battle for second is going to be heated down the stretch, and it won’t be easy for the Angels as they will take on the Padres and Dodgers in the last five games. Taking the mound Thursday will be righthander Griffin Canning. Canning is 0-3 with a 4.57 ERA on the season. In his last outing, he went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits in an 8-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies last Friday.
The Angels’ offense is led by center fielder Mike Trout. Trout is having yet another MVP-type season, hitting .294 with 16 home runs and 40 RBI. Third baseman David Fletcher is the only Angels regular hitting over .300, checking in at .305.
