- Newcastle are unbeaten in six previous meetings with Southampton.
- Southampton will be without injured influential frontman Danny Ings on Friday.
- Both teams scored in each of Newcastle’s last five Premier League fixtures.
- Southampton scored in all but one of their Premier League assignments this term.
Southampton dealt Ings blow
Wednesday morning brought the news Saints fans had been dreading, as Ralph Ralph Hasenhüttl revealed that star striker Danny Ings was facing up to a four to six week spell on the sidelines after he picked up knee injury against Aston Villa.
Ings had played an instrumental part in helping Southampton to win four of their last five Premier League fixtures, though the talismanic forward’s absence could halt the Saints’ early charge up the table.
With seven goal contributions, Ings has had a hand in 50% of the Saints’ total league goals this term, and without the 28-year-old, Southampton’s chances of winning on Friday against Newcastle are decidedly slimmer.
Magpies put more points on the board
Steve Bruce’s Newcastle upset the odds to beat early pace setters Everton last weekend, and their 2-1 victory – inspired by a brace from Callum Wilson – fired the Magpies to within touching distance of the Premier League’s top half.
Summer signing Wilson has now scored a hugely impressive six goals in his first seven top-tier runouts for his new employers, and with the ex-Cherries star leading the line, Newcastle have scored in all but one of their first seven matches overall.
Goals likely at both ends
While Newcastle, who generally adopt a safety-first approach, could never be described as prolific, the Magpies are definitely consistent goal-scorers, and we expect them to find the net for the 6th Premier League game on the bounce on Friday against a Saints team that have already shipped 12 goals this term.
Despite deploying Newcastle in a low-block and packing their defensive third with bodies, Steve Bruce has watched his team claim just one clean sheet in the league this season however, and the Magpies conceded at least once in each of their last six outings.
Even without Danny Ings, Southampton should be able to make an impact on the scoresheet at St. Mary’s on Stadium against a defence carrying such underwhelming numbers, especially with Che Adams and set-piece specialist James Ward-Prowse finding form.
However, while we expect Southampton to score, Ings’ absence should take the wind out of the Saints’ sails, impacting their overall chances of winning. With those factors aligned, a 1-1 correct score prediction is advised alongside our both teams to score forecast for Friday’s skirmish on the south coast.
Newcastle are unbeaten in six previous meetings with Southampton, and with Danny Ings ruled out, the Magpies have a huge opportunity to further enhance that impressive record this week.
