The Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park will serve as an official prep for the Kentucky Derby for the first time.
The July 18 event will determine standings in the 3-year-old dirt male division. Points will be awarded on a 100-40-20-10 basis to the top four finishers.
Some of the top probables for the race include Authentic, Ete Indian, and Dr Post.
Here is a look at some of the contenders set for the Haskell Stakes.
Authentic, Ete Indien
Authentic will ship east for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
The son of Into Mischief owned by Spendthrift Farm, Straight Racing, and Madaket Stables has a career record of 3-1-0 from four starts with earnings of $411,200.
He finished second last time out in the June 6 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby (G1) at Santa Anita. Prior to that, he scored a victory in the March 7 San Felipe Stakes (G2) and the Jan. 4 Sham Stakes (G3), both at Santa Anita as well. His Sham Stakes performance resulted in a 113 Speed Figure.
Authentic is the top horse coming into the race, and his regular rider is Drayden Van Dyke.
Ete Indien should provide some tough competition. Trained by Patrick Biancone, the son of Summer front has a career record of 3-1-1 from seven starts with earnings of $407,406.
The colt’s last performance was a fourth-place effort in a June 10 allowance optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park. He also took third in the March 28 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) and won the Feb. 29 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), both at Gulfstream.
Another big performance came back on Feb. 1 when he finished second in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3).
Ete Indien is normally joined by jockey Florent Geroux.
St. Elias Stable’s Dr Post is another one of the top runners among the talented field of probables.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, he has a career record of 2-1-0 from four starts with earnings of $261,635.
He finished second in the June 20 Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) at Belmont Park, registering a 107 Speed Figure. He also won the April 25 Unbridled Stakes (Black Type) and a March 29 maiden special weight race at Gulfstream Park.
Dr Post’s regular rider is Irad Ortiz, Jr.
The rest of the probables (trainer) for the Haskell Stakes includes: Ancient Warrior (J. Hollendorfer); Sonneman (S. Asmussen); Ny Traffic (S. Joseph, Jr.); Fame to Famous (J. Mc); Lebda (C. Gonzalez); and Jesus’ Team (J. D’Angelo).
