The San Diego Handicap Betting Preview and FREE PLAY- Saturday, July 18, 2020

The Grade 2, $150,000 San Diego Handicap will run as Race 10 on the July 18 card at Del Mar. 

The event for 3-year-olds and up will cover 1 1/16 miles and include names like Maximum Security and Ax Man among the field of seven.

Here is a look at the top contenders set for the San Diego Handicap.

Maximum Security, Ax Man

One of the top horses coming into the event is Maximum Security, trained by the Hall of Famer Bob Baffert. 

The 4-year-old son of New Year’s Day only had one race this year, which was a victory in the big Saudi Cup on Feb. 29 at King Abdulaziz Racecourse.

His career record is 8-1-0 from 10 starts with earnings of $11,801,900.

In 2019, he scored the Dec. 7 Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) at Aqueduct, where he was awarded a 123 Speed Figure. He also took the Oct. 26 Bold Ruler Handicap (G3) at Belmont Park and the July 20 Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) at Monmouth Park.

He will break from post 5 under jockey Abel Cedillo.

Ax Man will provide some of the competition. Trained by Bob Baffert as well, the 5-year-old gelding son of Misremembered has a career record of 6-0-3 from 13 starts with earnings of $288,917.

Last time out, he scored a June 20 allowance optional claiming race at Santa Anita Park. He also finished fifth in the June 7 Triple Bend Stakes (G2), first in a May 16 allowance optional claiming race, and third in the Jan. 26 Clocker’s Corner Stakes (Black Type), all at Santa Anita.

Ax Man will break from post 2 under J. Diaz, Jr.

Higher Power

Hronis Racing’s Higher Power is another runner coming into the race. Trained by Juan Leyva, the 5-year-old son of Medaglia D’Oro has a career record of 5-2-6 from 17 starts with earnings of $1,486,648.
His last performance was a second-place effort in the June 6 Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita. He also finished back in 10th in the Jan. 25 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes presented by Runhappy (G1) at Gulfstream. 

In 2019, he finished third in the Nov. 2 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and third in the Sept. 28 Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita.

Higher Power will break from post 1 under Flavien Prat.

The rest of the field (post, trainer) will include: Midcourt (post 3, J. A. Shireffs); Dark Vader (post 4, P. Eurton); Combatant (post 6, J. Leyva); and Sharp Samurai (post 7, M. Glatt).
