The Grade 1, $300,000 United Nations Stakes will run as Race 11 on the July 18 card at Monmouth Park.
The event for 3-year-olds and up will cover 1 1/8 miles on turf and include names like Arklow and Paret among the wide-open field of nine.
Here is a look at the top contenders coming into the United Nations Stakes.
Arklow and Paret
Donegal Racing, Joseph Bulger, and Peter Coneway’s Arklow is coming in as one of the top runners.
Trained by Brad Cox, the 6-year-old son of Arch has a career record of 6-7-2 from 27 starts with earnings of $1,862,116.
Last time out, he finished sixth in the July 12 TVG Elkhorn Stakes (G2) at Keeneland. He also took second in the June 13 Louisville Sakes (G3) at Churchill Downs, fifth in the Jan. 25 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes presented by Runhappy (G1) at Gulfstream Park, and eighth in the Nov. 2 Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) at Santa Anita.
Arklow will break from post 1 under jockey Mike Smith.
Matthew Schera and Orangelia Racing Stable’s Paret has a career record of 5-2-5 from 22 starts with earnings of $306,328.
Trained by James Lawrence, the 6-year-old gelding son of Harbour Watch scored the June 4 Tiler Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont Park, registering a 109 Speed Figure. That was his only 2020 start.
In 2019, he finished second in the Oct. 13 Point of Entry Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont and third in the Sept. 28 Rainbow Heir Stakes (Black Type) at Monmouth Park.
He will break from post 9 under Jorge Vargas, Jr.
Another runner to keep an eye on is Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Robert LaPenta, and Dixiana Farms’ Current.
He has a career record of 2-1-4 from 13 starts with earnings of $326,550.
The 4-year-old son of Curlin took fifth in the June 4 Tiler Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont Park. He also finished third in the March 28 Kitten’s Joy Pan American Stakes (G2) and third in a March 6 allowance optional claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs.
Current will break from post 6 under Antonio Gallardo.
The rest of the field (post, trainer) will include: Standard Deviation (post 2, H G Motion); Muggsamatic (post 3, M J Maker); Eve’s Medal (post 4, J D Stephens); Aquaphobia (post 5, M J Maker); O Dionysus (post 7, C Murphy); and Corelli (post 8, J Thomas).
